Mountmaking Forum ›SIlicone rubber coated magnets

Emily Meyer

Hi Everyone,

Our conservators at the De Young are interested in testing out these silicone rubber coated magnets in our textile displays. While the silicone rubber avoids the sulfurous off-gassing produced by natural rubber, I've heard cautionary tales of silicone leeching an oily residue and would hesitate to use it in direct contact with a textile. Has anyone tested out something similar, or could you point me to a helpful resource? I'm tempted to stick to our tried and true mount padding techniques, but don't want to cross this option off the list prematurely!

Thank you, Emily Meyer

A  simple, crude test is to clamp the silicone rubber against a clean, unglazed terracotta pot for a few weeks and then see if any oils have been absorbed by the terracotta.  This is a very interesting product, please let us know how it works out.
