Heat Proof Soldering Mat: asbestos or not asbestos (Archived from Mountmaking Forum email group)

Seasons Greetings, Mountmakers!

My ancient asbestos soldering surface is on it's last leg. I'm trying to find a replacement and having a difficult time. The one I have is about 33" x 26 1/2".

Can anyone recommend a place to order a new one, maybe I'm searching for the wrong thing (I tired "Heat Proof Soldering Mat," "asbestos sheet for hot work","Non-asbestos jewelry making," etc.)

Thanks for any help!

I use Kiln bricks, also known as firebricks. I love them because our soldering station can be modular.  I can make one large station break it up and make it into two if needed.  I use the bricks in to help me arrange things to be soldered and little risers to rest gator clip stands and keep them out of the reach of my torch.

Good luck!

Hi Laura,

This stuff is great (its a small jar) and so is this website.  If you call and ask for help on "this or that" they are an awesome team to recommend a product for your needs.  Hope this helps.
