FT Exhibits Technician, California Museum, Sacramento, CA

Overview:

The Exhibits Technician plays a key role in installing, fabricating, and maintaining the Museum’s long-term and temporary exhibits, advancing its mission to educate people about California’s rich history, its diversity, and its unique influence on the world of ideas, innovation, art, and culture. Working as a part of the exhibits team, the Exhibits Technician fabricates exhibit components and maintains, installs and deinstalls Museum objects and displays.


Responsibilities:

Construct, install, and dismantle temporary exhibits including performing basic fabrication with a variety of materials and media

Perform carpentry for custom pedestal and case construction, including sanding, painting, and finishing

Fabricate exhibit graphics and labels

Implement lighting schemes for temporary exhibits with attention to conservation requirements

Build custom storage and shipping containers that meet professional standards of conservation and security

Assist with packing and unpacking art and artifacts

Assist with maintenance of exhibits, including surface cleaning and repairs.

Assist with the loading and unloading of deliveries, ensuring safe movement of artwork and crates

Monitor temperature, humidity and light levels in galleries and storage areas

Monitor workshop tools and other exhibit equipment inventories and place routine supply orders

Maintain the museum workshops including the safe use and maintenance of power and hand tools

Support outside contractors as needed

Other duties as assigned


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

Careful attention to safety, detail, and accuracy

Strong initiative

Ability to deliver project outcomes and meet deadlines as part of a collaborative process

Ability to work well both as part of a team and independently

Effective communication skills

Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools used in fine art preparation, including the safe handling of art and artifacts

Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools used in exhibit preparation

Ability to work accurately from schematics, drawings, and verbal descriptions

Basic computer literacy


Minimum Qualifications:

2 years of experience in art/artifact handling and/or carpentry

Demonstrated familiarity with basic woodshop power tools and safety procedures, and the ability to use power and hand tools safely

Ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs. and to climb ladders up to 14’

Ability to see objects up close and at a distance

Willingness to work flexible hours when necessary and to participate in a wide variety of duties as assigned

High school diploma or equivalent

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and booster or an approved medical or religious exemption


Position:

Full-time, non-exempt, reports to Exhibitions Manager. Typical work hours Mon.-Fri. between 8:00 am- 4:30 pm. with occasional evening and/or weekend hours as needed. Benefits include paid vacation, 10 paid holidays, dental and vision insurance, employer-subsidized health plan, and 401(k) savings plan with match. Starting salary range $45,000-$50,000, commensurate with experience.
