MJ@bkmetalworks.com Mount Making with Sasha Nixon In this eight week course students will be introduced to the theory and practice of making mounts and the unique challenges of mounting jewelry. Classes will progress from initial design, through fabrication and installation, and consider the needs of museum, gallery, and personal objects. Custom mounts can elevate the display of your art practice or retail business. Making mounts is also a specialized and sought-after skill set if you are looking to make a career in metalworking or supplement income with freelance work. This course includes lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice sessions making mounts. Students will have the option to create their own mounts for personal objects. This course will focus on three stages of the mount making process: Design The beginning of the process and arguably the most important. This section includes assessing the nature and condition of the object, determining contact points for supporting the object, the overall shape of the mount, and appropriateness and strength of mount materials. Fabrication Students will working primarily with brass and archival padding materials to execute the design. This stage can involve soldering, cutting, bending and shaping, pinning, padding, and painting. Installation Securely fastening mounts to bases and installing the objects in them while preventing damage to the object. Sasha Nixon is a metalsmith, curator, and jewelry historian. She is a member of the Museum of Arts and Design’s Exhibition Design and Installation team and a Critic at the Rhode Island School of Design. She is the on-staff mount maker for MAD, specializing in mounting jewelry. Before coming to MAD she had also made mounts for exhibitions at Bard Graduate Center, Pratt, and several private collections. She has curated, designed, and installed exhibitions at some of New York City’s leading institutions.
