Mount management

Hi Laura, We keep some mounts but not all. Our Anthropology dept. vets this (not the MountShop). They will keep a mount if it is free standing or on a panel and if it will fit into Anthro collection space. They give the mounts a temporary tag that connects it to the objects in their part of the database. Sometimes objects are stored on such mounts and sometimes they are not. If seperated from the object they have a seperate shelf unit in storage dedicated to mounts. So at the end of a show we will offer mounts to any of the collection managers to see if they want the mount back with the object. Some of the various department want the mounts because the mount can also be used as a storage mount. Sometimes they want the mount because it may be an item they like to pull out a lot and put on display for tours. If that is the case it is the various departments that keep track of the mounts. I have been grateful for the mounts our collection managers manage to keep. Those stashed mounts do get re-used in house or for loans. I have tried keeping mounts in the shop but I am so limited with space that it either gets canabalized or tossed out. Best of Luck Pam

To SLewis, The word braising is used for both cooking and welding techniques. Here is a short definition of braising of metals. Brazing is a metal-joining process in which two or more metal items are joined together by melting and flowing a filler metal into the joint, with the filler metal having a lower melting point than the adjoining metal. Brazing differs from welding in that it does not involve melting the work pieces. pgaible

Hi Gina, Our conservators will not allow Sintra to be used inside of our case with artifacts especially long term exhibits. We are using Acrylic everywhere.

Hi Emilio, We have used a flat Artsorb sheet behind 2-D art work and or herbarium sheets. But we did not put the Artsorb in direct contact with the object. Essentially we created a shallow wall case that is sealed with the object floating or looks like it is floating in front of the desiccant chamber behind it. There is air space allowed on all sides and between object layer and desiccant chamber. A gasket on the back and with a back door that is screwed in place. We used a mat to hide the airspace gap. All of this is inside an acrylic box then the box was slid into a frame. If you need more info. Drop me an email.
