Hi all- I have a bird mount that is on a chunk of shedding cork. Is
there anything I can coat it with to keep it from shedding while on
exhibit? Our ornithologist isn't concerned about preserving the cork,
but we don't have time to re-mount the bird.
Thanks, Elizabeth Soriano Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History

Case gasket material We have been using Clean Seal silicone weather striping for our case gaskets. The designer wants to try something different (cheaper). What our museums using?

I recommend you try applying small patches of polyester stabiltex over the cork and adhere it by brush with liquid B-72, or thinned matte medium. The stabiltex is extremely fine and especially if the cork has any mottling or texture to it, the fabric will disappear. If stabiltex is too expensive, you may want to try experimenting with using the thinnest sheets of rice paper you can find. As long as you can attach the rice paper directly onto the cork and not leave any air gaps, the color of the substrate material should come through.
